Getting to Coles Bay turn off from HobartAirport…..
When you reach the airport exit turn right and
continue on till you reach a roundabout. Follow this round to
the right, signposted Sorell. It’s the A3. Drive through
the Sorell strip shopping centre till you reach a T intersection.
Turn left. You are still on the A3 and will pass through Orielton,
Runnymede, Buckland, Orford, Triabunna, Swansea and Cranbrook.
It’s 33Km from Swansea to the Coles Bay
turnoff, which will be on your right.
Getting to the Coles Bay turn off from the boat at Devonport
The boat arrives early in the morning and you don’t get
breakfast before disembarking – take a thermos if you
really need an early morning cuppa. As you leave the boat area
you will receive a plastic bag containing heaps of tourist information, including a map inside the back cover of Treasure
Island.
Even without the map you will be able to follow the
other cars and turn left away from Devonport and towards Launceston.
It’s Route 1.
Breakfast ideas……
About 5 km along this road
on your right you will see d’Anvers Chocolates. They are
open for breakfast and do wonderful hot chocolate served in wide
continental cups without handles. It’s delicious. We once
foolishly ordered croissants. Unless you are absolutely starving,
one serve between 2 would be plenty. They also do a lovely baguette
with cream cheese and smoked salmon. Again one serve between two
is ample.
If you can wait a bit longer, another place that opens
for breakfast is the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm. It’s on
the left after about 50km – 40 minutes easy driving. They make
a range of delicious things, many of which include raspberries - muffins for example. The restaurant
has an open fire and big windows looking out onto a pretty garden.
Suitably fortified you are now ready to set off……
Stay on Route 1 heading towards Launceston. However,
there is no need to go into the city. You will come to a junction
where you can vere left into Launceston or keep going to the right.
This is still Route 1 and is also called the Midland Highway.
There are 2 main ways to reach us via the Midland
Highway.
1. Head south till you reach Conara and turn left
on the A4. It is 81 Km from this point to Chain of Lagoons,
where you reach the A3. The signpost mentions the East Coast and
you pass through Avoca, Fingal and St Mary’s. At St Mary’s
take the road to the right which is signposted Elephant Pass and
Bicheno. (It’s still the A4, but so is the left fork, which
goes to St Helens.Confusing!) The road is windy but very pretty and at the top
you come to the Elephant Pass Pancake Barn. This is a bit of fun
if you need lunch by then. There are funny notices about what the
elephants will do if you park in the wrong spot etc and the menu
consists of various types of pancakes. Keep going and eventually
you will reach the A3 at Chain of Lagoons. Turn right heading for
Bicheno. From Bicheno it’s 11 Km to the Coles Bay turn off.
This is quite an attractive drive but it takes longer than the other
way.
2. Head south till you reach Campbell Town then
turn left onto the B34, signposted Lake Leake and Swansea. It’s
57 Km from Campbell Town to the A3, where you turn left heading
for Bicheno. It also mentions Coles Bay at this point. It’s
then 23 Km to the Coles Bay turn off. This is the shorter of the
2 routes.
Getting
to ColesBay turn off from LauncestonAirport…..
When you leave the airport turn left and continue
until you reach the outskirts of Evandale. There is no need to go
into the town. Just follow the signs to the A1 (Midland Highway) which
you will reach in 5 Km then turn left heading south towards Hobart.

How to find us from
the ColesBay turn off…..
Whether you arrive from the north via Bicheno or
from the south, you will be driving along the Tasman Highway, A3.
The turn off to Coles Bay is well signposted but still easy enough
to whiz past, especially from the south. Turn into the Coles Bay
Rd, C302, left from the north, right from the south.
When you have been driving for 19 Km you will notice a few houses
on the hill ahead of you.
Next on your right at 20.5Km is Swanwick Rd.
Then there's a 65Km/hr sign followed immediately by another showing
a car hitting a wallaby and saying 65Km/hr from dusk to dawn.
The road now enters a series of bends and you'll notice a golf
course and more houses on your right.
Shortly afterwards on the left is our
blue and yellow sign saying Sheoaks B & B 600 metres, with
an arrow pointing to the right. The sign means 600 metres to
our door, not 600 metres before
you need to turn.
After 120 metres turn right into Hazards View Drive. This road sign
is difficult to see, so slow right down.
If you reach The Edge of the Bay Resort, stop!!!
You have gone too far so turn around and head back the way you
came. Hazards View Drive will be the next proper road on your left.
The street sign is much easier to see from that direction and
you will also pass another of our blue and yellow signs.
Turn into Hazards View Drive then after a short distance turn left
into Oyster Bay Court. There's a blade sign to Sheoaks immediately
under the street sign. Follow Oyster Bay Court round parallel with
the coast. We are almost at the end.
Our sign is on a grey concrete block pillar
to the left of a gravel driveway shared with J & M Craven.
Sheoaks is the low grey house immediately in front of you.
